Warning For Google Chrome Users

Google has decided, in their infinite wisdom, that downloads from websites that do not use SSL security certificates (those whose URLs start with HTTP:// rather than HTTPS://) are not trustworthy. It often refuses to download files from for that reason. There is very little to be gained by the added expense of such a certificate, apart from appeasing Google, because no sensitive information is kept on the website or transmitted between you and the site. Other major browsers on the Windows platform (Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge -- which is itself derived from Chrome) do not exhibit this behavior.

Using one of those browsers will eliminate the problem.

That said...

It IS possible to convince Chrome to perform the download. Here's how.

  1. Click the download button on the web page. Nothing happens.
  2. right-click menuRIGHT-Click the download button on the web page -- that is, click the right-hand button on your mouse or touchpad. A menu will appear. (That's a standard convention in Windows software -- right-clicking brings up a menu of things you can do to what you clicked on.) Choose the "Save Link As..." option. A dialog box will appear, allowing you to specify where the downloaded file will be saved (and to rename it if you wish). Just click the Save button, unless you want to change the name or location.
  3. chrome download buttonYou'll see a quick notification that Chrome is not downloading the file because it "isn't secure," which disappears into the downloads button to the right of the address bar. Click that downloads button.
  4. chrome download listA list of downloads will drop down. The one at the top will say "Insecure download blocked." Click the little right-arrow to the right of it.
  5. insecure boxYou'll see another little box that complains that the site isn't using a secure connection. Click the "Download insecure file" button in that box.

Chrome will then grudgingly download the file...but you'll have to do this for EVERY file you download here.

Again, if you use Firefox or Edge, you won't have to go through this rigamarole.
